Unlicensed Seamen
Most unlicensed seamen start their careers in entry-level positions working for the Deck, Engine or Conveyor Department. Those with food service experience may apply for the position of Second Cook, a position in the Galley Department. After meeting minimum sea time requirements, an entry-level seaman is eligible to take a US Coast Guard exam for advancement to Able Seaman (AB) or Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED). Second Cooks are not required to take exams for promotion to Steward in the Galley Department.
Our unlicensed seamen are members of the United Steelworkers and are hired through the company personnel office.
All Interlake unlicensed seamen receive room and board while employed aboard one of our vessels. We also provide paid vacation, pension, medical, and education benefits. We strive to promote from within.
